Tesla has officially launched the Model YL, a new, larger Model Y with 6 seats, in China. The vehicle is priced at 339,000 Chinese Yuan, which is roughly $47,000 USD. The Model YL is around $3,600 USD more expensive than the Model Y Long Range AWD in China.

It boasts a range of 751 km (466 miles) based on the CLTC driving cycle.

Tesla has revealed that the vehicle is approximately 180mm (7 inches) longer, 24mm (1 inch) taller, with a wheelbase extension of 150mm (6 inches). It offers up to 2,539 liters of storage space and features electric armrests in the second-row seats.

The company is targeting deliveries for September. The pricing of the Model YL is considered reasonable compared to Tesla’s current lineup. However, it is more expensive than other six-seater all-electric SUV options available in China, such as the Onvo L90.

There has been some criticism regarding the design of the Model Y, particularly its suitability as a three-row vehicle due to the steeply sloped rear end, which can affect headroom in the third row and exposure to sunlight under the tailgate glass. Additionally, the lack of air vents in the third row could make it uncomfortable in warmer weather.

Consumers have expressed a desire for a more boxy and spacious model that can comfortably accommodate families in all three rows. The Model X remains a less popular option due to its higher price and unique falcon wing doors. There is anticipation to see how the Model YL will be priced in North America, where it is believed to have higher demand.

If priced similarly to the Chinese market, it could be around $51,000 in the US. This pricing would make it a competitive and attractive option in the market. However, this might also signal a decline in popularity for the Model X.

Overall, while Tesla’s new offering is a positive addition to their lineup, some suggest that the company needs to consider more affordable models to capture a larger market in China and other regions.
