President Trump recently met with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan and members of his cabinet at the White House. The meeting aimed to address concerns about Tan’s leadership and his past investments in Chinese companies. In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the discussion as “very interesting” and praised Tan’s “success and rise” as an “amazing story.” This marks a shift in Trump’s stance, as he had previously called for Tan’s resignation, citing his Chinese investments as a national security risk.

Intel stated that Tan and Trump had a “candid and constructive discussion on Intel’s commitment to strengthening U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership.” The company did not confirm whether Trump raised concerns about Tan’s links to China during the meeting. The meeting comes at a challenging time for Intel, which has struggled to keep up with rivals.

Trump praises Intel CEO’s success

Tan, who became CEO in March, has announced plans to lay off 15 percent of the workforce and focus on markets for A.I. chips, personal computer chips, and improving chip manufacturing technology. Intel has also been a prime beneficiary of the CHIPS Act, a bipartisan effort to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing. However, Tan’s past investments in Chinese companies and his previous role as CEO of Cadence Design Systems, which was fined for unlawfully exporting semiconductor design tools to a Chinese university working on nuclear explosives, have raised questions about his leadership.

In response to the scrutiny, Tan stated on Intel’s website that the U.S. “has been my home for more than 40 years” and indicated his willingness to meet with the administration to clarify the facts. Trump’s post on Truth Social mentioned that Tan and cabinet members would meet next week to bring suggestions, signaling a potential collaboration between the administration and Intel’s leadership. The future of Intel under Tan’s leadership remains uncertain, but his recent interactions with President Trump suggest a willingness to navigate through political and economic pressures to steer the company back on track.
