The Powerball jackpot has surged to $950 million after no ticket matched all six numbers in Wednesday’s drawing, making it the sixth-largest prize in the game’s history.

Why it matters: The massive jackpot means the winner of the upcoming Saturday drawing could choose between an annuitized prize of $950 million or a lump sum payment of $428.9 million before taxes.

The details:

  • The winning numbers from Wednesday’s drawing were 9, 12, 22, 41, and 61, with the red Powerball number 25.
  • Six tickets won prizes of $1 million or more by matching all five white balls.
  • The jackpot has been climbing steadily since May 31, when a California player claimed a $204.5 million prize.
  • Over this streak, 56 tickets have won $1 million or more, and 558 tickets have won $50,000 or more.

The record Powerball jackpot stands at $2.04 billion, won in California in November 2022.

What they’re saying:

  • “America has signaled loud and clear – it’s ready to play for a massive Powerball jackpot,” said Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO.

The big picture: Powerball tickets cost $2 per play and are available in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. More than half of the proceeds from ticket sales stay within the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold.

What’s next: The next Powerball drawing is scheduled for Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET. Winners opting for the annuity option will receive one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year.
