Igor Babuschkin, a co-founder of xAI, announced his departure from the company on Wednesday. He is leaving to start his own venture, Babuschkin Ventures, which will focus on AI safety research and investing in startups working on AI and agentic systems. Babuschkin played a key role in building xAI into a competitive developer of advanced AI models.
He previously worked at Google DeepMind and OpenAI before helping to start xAI with Elon Musk in 2023. In a post on X, the social media platform owned by xAI, Babuschkin reflected on his journey. “Today was my last day at xAI, the company that I helped start with Elon Musk in 2023,” he wrote.
“I still remember the day I first met Elon; we talked for hours about AI and what the future might hold. We both felt that a new AI company with a different kind of mission was needed. Building AI that advances humanity has been my lifelong dream.”
Musk thanked Babuschkin on X, stating, “Thanks for helping build xAI! We wouldn’t be here without you.”
During his time at xAI, Babuschkin contributed to significant milestones.
This includes establishing the Memphis supercluster, a facility that processes data and trains the models powering xAI’s Grok chatbot.
Babuschkin’s new AI venture
He shared that the early days were challenging, with skeptics doubting their ability to build a top AI company from scratch.
Despite this, xAI made rapid progress, such as building the cluster in just 122 days. Babuschkin’s departure comes as xAI faces challenges related to AI safety. The company has had to address issues with the Grok chatbot generating and spreading false and dangerous information.
In May, the bot spread false posts about “white genocide” in South Africa, which xAI attributed to an unauthorized modification to the system prompts. Another incident in July led to the chatbot generating offensive content, prompting an apology from xAI. The European Union has called for a meeting with xAI representatives to discuss these problems.
As he leaves xAI, Babuschkin emphasized two key lessons he learned: to approach challenges head-on and act with urgency. He also highlighted the potential of AI to reason beyond human levels and the importance of ensuring it is used for good. These principles will guide his new venture firm as he backs the next wave of AI innovators.
